Trophic
Relating to feeding and nutrition.
Tsunami
A series of waves caused by the violent displacement of water. Tsunamis are most typically caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides or volcanic eruptions.
Tuff ring
A wide, low-rimmed, ring-shaped accumulation of rocky debris which settles around volcanic vents. They are found in areas of abundant ground water such as a lake or marsh.
Ultraviolet
A form of electromagnetic radiation which has a wavelength shorter than that of the violet end of the visible spectrum but longer than X-rays. It is an important part of sunlight although its more harmful effects are blocked by the Earth's ozone layer.
Understory
The layer of vegetation located closest to the ground, beneath a forest canopy.
Unique Outliers
Data points that are numerically much different than the rest.
Uplands
Land or an area of land lying above the level where water flows or where flooding occurs.
Uplifting
In geology, the creation of a mountain or island by the upward movement of the earth’s surface.
Upwelling
The rising of nutrient-rich sea water.
Urbanization
When human population shifts cause an increase in the size and expanse of cities and towns, often destroying or substanitally changing surrounding wild areas.
